In the world of creatives and makers, collaboration can be a catalyst for exploration, innovation, and fresh production for all parties. When visions and skills begin to merge, the possibilities are increased.
This past winter, a friend came to the studio to beautifully document our space for his editorial blog (HERE).. It was a joy that he was able to come into our space and share his talents with Douglas & Co.
Not only did he contribute his own skills, but he shared about our craftsmanship with another company, Wolfe Brothers Co. They reached out to us, and we decided to collaborate.
Wolfe Brothers Co. is a husband and wife team, similar to us. They have two boys, and they are a family lifestyle brand. They started out offering only children’s products, but they have expanded and now offer fine products for the whole family and home. It has been an honor working with this company that shares many of our core values: quality, integrity, craftsmanship, and communication.
For our collaboration, we have contributed to their Heirloom Collection, which is currently on pre-sale and officially launching on October 31st!
Here’s a peek into our process:
The conception phase was the most exciting part of the process. It involved a lot of back and forth communication with the Wolfe Brothers team as we explored our many ideas. We ended up moving forward with a leather tote and a children’s backpack. We had fun designing the details of the pack, from the color of the canvas to the type of metal for the snaps. It took time and patience, but the final product was well worth it!
Once we had the design concept, we were ready to create a prototype. We first sourced our primary material, and working with other materials we had on hand in the studio, we created a sample. We sent the sample back to get the sign-off, and then we sourced the other materials.
After all our materials were finalized and in hand, we began production. Making the first few templates of a new product requires a lot of mental energy to remember the steps of construction. For construction of this pack, we prepared the straps and hardware first before affixing them to the shell of the bag.
Many templates later, we had finalized two beautiful new products.
Each time we do a collaboration, we learn so much, expanding and refining our skill set. We are always accepting submissions for collaborations.
